This imposing monument, commemorating the only
president of the C. S. A., is the work of Valentine. The rear
of the monument is a beautiful peristyle, upon which are ap-
propriate inscriptions. In the centre arises a lofty column
which is surmounted by a figure representing the spirit of
the South.
