Situated on Grant's Hill is one of the city's largest
buildings. It covers an entire block and the recent cut-
ting of the hump has made it still more imposing. Stone
steps have been erected to conform with the new street
level, which has been lowered 21 feet at that point. The
building of stone construction, was completed April 17,
1888 at a cost of $2.341.456.06. The interior furnishings
cost $113, 107.61. The height of the building is some 600
feet and a tower extends 330 feet above the roof level.
