Monmouth County Courth House
Additional Details:
The first courthouse of Monmouth County was erected in 1714. This was a small wooden building and remained in use until 1727 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1730 a new courthouse and jail were erected on the same site. This building was used for 75 years and is the one which was made historic by the Battle of Monmouth. It is said that Gen. Washington made his headquarters in that building. This second building was replaced in 1809 by a new structure which was destroyed by fire in 1873. The next courthouse building was erected in 1874 and used until 1930 when it was also damaged by fire. The present modern structure was erected at that time. The clock in the tower was procured by funds raised by subscriptions and placed in the building which was erected in 1874 C. T. American Art |
