Canal Street is the great broad avenue which
bisects the city and divides the old from the
new, the Vieux Carre from the modern city
and is the principal business street, lined with
great department stores and smart specialty
shops. Its name is derived from the fact it
was once a canal which formed a boundary for
the old city.
