Additional Details:
One of the very diffcult pieces of engineering in this section, as there is no other route except to follow the steep and rapid descent that follows along the canyon of the Rio Grande - Halt occasionally en route to gaze at beauty of the perpendicular walls of the towering mountains, that hover on either side of the canyon and listen to the murmur of the rapids of the Rio Grande as it hastens on to the Gulf of Mexico.

I lived and kayaked in Taos for 27 years. This is not the Rio Grande, but the Rio Pueblo de Taos. The confluence with the Rio Grande is abou 3 miles down stream after some class V water. As far as I know, John Casey and I were the first to kayak this stretch back in 1979. I'm still kayaking in Washington state.
