Montgomery County was established in 1796 and was named in honor of Colonel John Montgomery who explored the Cumberland river country in 1777. He participated in the punitive expedition against "Dragging Canoe" in 1779 and accompanied John Donelson on his river voyage to Nashboro. Col. Montgomery was signer of the Cumberland Compact and was founder of Clarksville. He commanded territorial troops in the Nickajack expedition in 1794 and met his untimely death later that year at the hands of the Indians
