Lauderdale County was established in 1835. It was named for Colonel James Lauderdale who was killed at the Battle of New Orleans. The City was named for a General Ripley Veteran of the War of 1812. This is the fourth Courthouse structure of Lauderdale County. The first was of poplar logs and was in use from 1838 to 1844
