THE HUGH C. LEIGHTON CO., MANUFACTURERS, PORTLAND, ME, U.S. A L-1772
On this estate formerly stood a house in
which resided Miss Caroline Plummer, the
donor of the several Plummer bequests. Capt.
John Bertram purchased the estate after the
decease of Miss Pluramer and erected a fine
brick dwelling house upon it in 1855. Some
years after his death his heirs December 1st,
1887 offered the estate to the city for a public
library building and the offer was accepted.
The building is surrounded with an ample lawn
on which stands the Bertram Elm, the finest
American elm in this region, measurg sev-
enteen feet in circnmference.
