The site of General Lee's farewell ad-
dress to his soldiers (April, 1865), is on the
hill north of Appomattox River, in the woods
on the east side of the old stage road, and
about one and a half miles from the Court
House. Here in a few words, after his sur-
render to General Grant, General Lee told his
brave men to return to their homes and be-
come worthy citizens.
