TATE GALLERY, MILLBANK.
Presented and endowed by Sir Henry Tate to the
nation, with the sincere endeavour of popularising and
engendering a love in the people for the beautiful, and
with the view of encouraging purely British Art. The
site on which the Gallery now stands was occupied by
Old Millbank Prison 1813, it ceased to be a civil prison
1870. The Military Authorities taking over its regula-
tion for military prisoners, the increasing value of its
position and other reasons, resulted in its demolition
and part of the site is given over as a Military Hospital
(Guards) and County Council Dwellings.
