THE HIGHLAND LIght infANTRY
(7 1st Foot and 74th Foot)
This famous Regiment has the proud distinction of
bearing more battle honours on its colours than any other
Scottish regiment, its earliest battles being fought in India
soon after it was raised in 1777. At the Battle of Assaye
it won a special colour, still carried on state occasions.
Long service in India was followed by many years'
active service in the Peninsula, under Wellington, and it
won additional honours at Quatre Bras and Waterloo.
Further fighting followed in South Africa, the Crimea, and
India, and it was also in Egypt in 1882 and South Africa
in 1899, its high reputation being fully maintained during
the Continental War by many new battalions.
