PICTURESQUE SITE OF IDAHO'S FIRST MISSION,
Hwy. 3, 6 miles N.W. of St. Maries, on the shadowy
St. Joe River. A primitive log cabin mission, long
since gone, was built by the Coeur d'Alene Indians,
supervised by the black-robed missionaries. Two-
thirds of the tribe were baptized and agriculture was
begun. Floods gave trouble however and in 1846,
the mission moved to Cataldo. Note the attractive
historical marker, one of nearly 200 erected by
Idaho Hwy. Dept.
