Three fourths of the cotton supply of the world is grown in the US; in 1905, 7,000,000 bales were exported. Standard bales weigh 500 pounds; if they are to be shipped any great distance, they are reduced to one-third their bulk by secondary presses, and thus compressed, are forced into the holds of the ships by jackscrews in order to occupy as little space as possible
