MODERN ATHENS–EDINBURGH
Seott Monument. This handsome monument
erected in 1840-4, at a cost of £15.560, ranks as one of
the finest Gothic monuments of modern times. It
stands 200 feet high, and was built from designs by
an almost unknown architect, Geo, Kemp. The
statue it enshrines was executed by Sir John Steell,
R.S.A., in grey Carrara marble. A chamber in the
spire is used as a museum for Scott relics.
