COLOMA SCHOOL
Coloma, California
This little red school house stands at the head of the
main street of Coloma. It was first built in Slateington
(Now Kelsy) in 1895. When the Coloma school burned
in 1922 the building was hauled down the narrow
crooked road by wagon teams. One of the best known
teachers in the school was Edwin Markham, author of
the poem, "Man With a Hoe.” Coloma had its start
when James Marshall discovered gold on the American
River on Jan. 24, 1848. Marshall's discovery won him
only hard luck. He died on Aug. 10, 1885 in poverty.
Little is left of Coloma that the miners knew a short
hundred years ago. The town has become a state park.
