Twenty-one years of construction were required
for completion of Illinois' Capitol Building. The
structure is one of the out-standing examples of public
building architecture of the post-Civil War period.
Ground was broken on March 11, 1868; the corner-
stone laying took place on October 5, 1868; the build-
ing was first occupied in 1876, and construction work
was finished in 1889.
Charles F. Carpentier, Illinois' 29th Secretary of
State, was inaugurated on January 12, 1953.
