MALE BLUEBACK OR SOCKEYE SALMON
More numerous on the west coast of North America
than all other salmon combined. Ranks next to
Chinook in commercial value and abounds in
waters from North California to Alaska and par-
ticularly in the Columbia and Fraser Rivers. Next
to smallest of salmon species – maximum weight
about 15 pounds – average 5 to 8 pounds – except
in breeding season clear bright blue, however in
the spawning season the back and sides become
red and the male develops the pronounced
hooked
upper jaw.
