Smokey Bear Museum Capitan, New Mexico In 1950, when a 17,000 acre fire burned rich timber in the Capitan Mountains, a tiny bear cub, with blistered feet, was rescued and flown to Washington, D. C. to become the living fire-preventing "Smokey", known and loved throughout the world. Pictured here is the museum built by the people of Capitan as a memorial to this now famous bear.
