HANAUMA BAY, HAWAIIAN ISLANDS
Green sand consists mainly of the mineral olivine.
It is found in areas which have an abundance
of a type of lava rock called Olivine basalt.
This yellow green sand accumulates as a result
of fragmentation and weathering of the lava
by the forces of nature. Olivine is often called
"Hawaiian Gold", which is reminiscent of
"Fool's Gold" (iron pyrites) found in the U.S.A.
The most noted green sand beach is located at
South Point on the Island of Hawaii.
