The University of Texas McDonald Observatory's 107-inch tele-
scope—the measurement indicates the diameter of the primary
mirror—was the third largest in the world when completed in 1969.
The telescope was partially funded by NASA to help prepare for
the exploration of the solar system by manned and unmanned
spacecraft.
