Great Lakes, Illinois
A typical compartment in one of the modern 1000
person recruit barracks. USNTC, Great Lakes, is located
on the shores of Lake Michigan, 35 miles north of down-
town Chicago and four miles from Waukegan. This facility
was established in 1911, and is the oldest and largest
of its kind in the U.S. Its essential role is the recruit training
of new inductees and the operation of service schools for
student Navy personnel.
