by William Gillette, a Shakespearian actor who won greatest
fame in the role of Sherlock Holmes. Struck by the beauty
of the country above Essex, he built there the fantastic
castle which thrills visitors today. Secret stairways, in-
visible rooms, a hidden gallery --- are all on exhibit today,
in the Gillette Castle, maintained by the State Park and
Forest Commission of Connecticut.
