THE DETROIT MUSEUM OF ART was built
by popular subscription of the citizens of Detroit,
at a cost of $225,000 in 1887. Its maintenance
is paid for by the city and is open daily to the
public. Its collection of art is valued at $500,000,
and includes the Stearns Oriental collection, one
of the best in the world; the James E. Scripps
collection, of old masters, and large representa-
tions of the work of modern artists. Lectures to
which the public is admitted free of charge are
given regularly by the director and others.
