This view shows the site of the first white settlement within the limits of what is now a city of over 100,000. Here the Dragoons came in 1843 and erected the blockhouse and cabins designated as Fort Des Moines, all of which are now gone. The marker shown in the foreground was erected to indicate the site of this first settlement and on it is a brass tablet giving the historical data. The ground originally held as a military reservation, is now owned by the City Park Board and a portion of the tract is used for a children's ground
