The Camel. (Camelus dromedarius.)
The Camel, one of the most useful of animals, is kept
in a domestic state from Africa to India; it is no longer
met with wild. The Camel is able to subsist a considerable
time without water, and can make long journeys carrying
heavy loads without fatigue. For these reasons it is the
animal best suited for traversing sandy deserts. The Arabian
Camel, sometimes called the dromedary as illustrated on
this card, has one hump on its back, while the Bactrian
Camel of Asia has two humps.
