ALSATIAN
Photograph from the Red Heart Series
A dog which finds its way into the newspaper
headlines more than any other breed nowadays
is the brave, intelligent Alsatian. The breed
has long had to fight against the myth that it
is half-wolf, but to-day it is famous through-
out the world for its tracking and obedience
work, for its war service in many branches of
the Armed forces, as a police dog to combat
crime and perhaps most valuable of all-as
a guide dog for the blind. One of the oldest
breeds known it has been traced back to
biblical times—the Alsatian is also known
(more correctly) as the German Shepherd Dog.
