GOLDEN PLOVER (Charadrius apricarius).
A resident breeding bird found in moorland country;
though great numbers, the majority of which are
immigrants from the continent, frequent pastures and
shores during the winter months. The females have less
black on the breasts than the males, and the youngsters
are a golden yellow with black mottles. Nest in hollow
in soil or depression in sand, with scanty lining of heather,
lichens, etc. There are 4 pear-shaped eggs, buff in colour
and blotched with brownish black. Call note a whistling
“ tlui.” Varied food including earthworms, small
molluscs, insects, seeds of grasses and weeds, and sea-
weed.
