The St. Bernard. This is one of the largest bieeds of
dogs, standing as a rule from 27 to 30 inches high at the
shoulder. It derives its name from the Hospice of St. Bernard
in Switzerland, the monks of which have trained these dogs
to roam over the mountains during stormy weather, carrying
cordials for the benefit of any travellers who may have lost
their way, and then to return to the monastery and guide the
monks to their find.
