The Ptarmigan (lagopus' mutus), here depicted in its
winter plumage, is a bird of the Phasianida family, only
resident in Great Britain in the northern part of Scotland.
Ptarmigans are about 15 inches long, and possess the pecu
liarity of changing the colour of their plumage, which is
practically entirely white in winter, and black and brown
and white in summer.
