REWARD CARD. 5-
The Pine Hawk Moth.
THIS fine hawk moth is common in all the great
pine-forests of Europe, yet, strange to say, it is not
found wild in England.
About a dozen years ago the insect was introduced
into the pine-forests of Suffolk, and for a time appeared
to have made a settlement, but it seems to have dis-
appeared again, so that there is possibly something in
our climate unsuitable to it.
The moth appears in June and July, and the eggs
are laid on the pine-needles. The caterpillar is a
characteristic "hawk” moth larva, with a caudal horn,
but, instead of the usual oblique stripes found on all the
closely-allied larvæ, the markings on this are longi-
tudinal, a form of colour-pattern that is especially
suited for the protection of caterpillars that live on
pine-trees.
In August and September the full-fed larvæ climb
down the trunk, burrow under the decaying pine-
needles lying under the trees, and make a hollow
cavity in which they change to a pupa. The pupal
stage lasts all the winter, the moth coming out in the
early summer of the next year.
