Green Woodpecker. This, the largest of our
woodpeckers, generally, known as the “Yaftle" is met
with in most of the wooded districts of England and Wales
but is almost unknown in Scotland and Ireland. Though
the greater part of its insect food is cantured on tree
Stems, it may frequently be seen feeding on the ground,
being especially partial to ants and their pupa.
