Entrance to the Charterhouse. Out of the old
fashioned Charterhouse Square not far from Smithfield,
the quiet old redbrick buildings of the Charterhouse are
enteren by a perpendicular arch under a projecting shelf
supported by lions. The Carthusian monastery of the
Salutation was founded by Sir Walter Manny in 1371,
and the famous school and hospital was opened in 1611.
The school was removed to Godalming in 1872 but the
bedesmen still live on here.
