Project Stargazer was established in Jan. 1959 for high altitude astronomical investigation from above 95 percent of the Earth's atmosphere. This permitted undistorted visual and photographic observations of the stars and planets. In Dec. 1962, Capt. Joseph Kittinger and Mr. William White ascended to an altitude of 82,200 ft. in the Stargazer gondola displayed at the AF Museum |
