This bird's eye view of Lake Mead and Boulder
City, Nevada, tells a convincing story of how
water can transform a desert wasteland into an
oasis. Pumps lift water from Hoover Dam 1300
feet to the community on a hill 7 miles to the
southwest. There the water nourishes the town
of some 3500 residents. Boulder City, built in
1931 to house workers on Hoover Dam, is visited
by some 3 million people yearly who come to
enjoy the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
