Liberty Bell History: 1751—Cast in London,
England, for the statehouse of the province of
Pennsylvania and bore a quotation from Le-
viticus, “Proclaim liberty throughout all the
land and to all the inhabitants thereof” 1752
-Hung in tower of statehouse, Philadelphia,
August, and cracked at first stroke of the
clapper. 1753—Recast in Philadelphia with
copper added and found to have lost its tone,
again recast and rung on many state occasions.
1776—Proclaimed the signing of the Declara-
tion of Independence on July 4. 1777-Taken
to Allantown, Pa., when Philadelphia was
threatened with British troops. 1778-Re-
turned to Philadelphia. 1781—Rung in cele-
bration of General Cornwallis' surrender to
General George Washington. 1799—Proclaimed
treaty of peace with England. Muffled toll
for the death of Washington. 1824—Pealed
welcome to Lafayette in Philadelphia. 1826–
Heralded jubilee of Declaration of Indepen-
dence. 1832-Greeted centennial anniversary
of birth of Washington. 1834-Muffled toll
for death of Lafayette. 1835–Tolled for last
time at the obsequies of John Marshall. The
first crack reappeared immediately afterward.
