Oregon has its State Capitol in Salem. The State has
an area of 96,030 square miles, and was admitted to the
Union in 1859. The State has the Oregon grape as its
floral emblem. Oregon is a name supposed to have been
derived from an Indian word meaning "the great flowing
river.”
