No. 152.
THE DISMAL SWAMP CANAL. An
and to drain adjacent lands being desired, a charter for
the construction of this canal was granted by the legis-
lature of Virginia on December 1, 1787. Some time
elapsed before work was begun. The first vessel passed
through it in 1822, and it was finally completed in 1826.
It connects the Elizabeth River, of Virginia, with the
Pasquatonk River in North Carolina. Its banks were
cut and the water let out by the Confederates to prevent
the Federals from using it during the Civil War. The
damage has since been repaired. (Other Dismal Swamp
scenes, Cards Nos. 153 and 154.)
