MURPHY'S
Early in 1849, John and Daniel Murphy, two
brothers, came from Monterey to do a little
gold digging. They struck it rich and the camp
took their name. It was here that Joaquin
Murrieta was a monte dealer in 1851. His
bloody career started when his brother was
hung, Joaquin was flogged. Outwardly the
town looks like it did in the 1800's, the street
is shaded by elms and Chinese heaven trees.
The buildings have iron shutters. A great num-
ber of notable men stopped here, Mark Twain,
Horatio Alger, Thomas Lipton, C. E. Bolton
(Black Bart the bandit), General Ulysses S.
Grant, and many others. . . M.P.
