MUSEUM OF NEBRASKA ART
Kearney, Nebraska
The Museum of Nebraska Art, formerly the Kearney post
office, was designed by James Knox Taylor of Washington,
D.C. Opened in September, 1911, it was a model office build-
ing of the period and was one of the first and best fireproof
steel frame structures. The Classic Design exterior is of New
Hampshire granite and Bedford sandstone. The interior is rich
in bronze details. The lobby floor is terrazzo of white and sien-
na marble in cement with a pattern of blocks of Tennessee
marble interspersed. The Renaissance Revival ediface monu-
ment staircases on the west and south facades are embraced
by Doric columns. It was officially listed in the National
Register of Historic Places in 1981. Located at 2401 Central
Avenue, the museum was opened in October, 1986, to provide
a home for the Nebraska Art Collection, which contains over
4000 pieces created by some 300 artists. The collection was
created in 1976 to conserve, collect and record the great cul-
tural works that are the heritage of Nebraska.
