ELEPHANT BUTTE LAKE
Truth or Consequences, New Mexico
These waters impounded by the Elephant Butte
Dam on the Rio Grande River form a lake 45
miles long. Built as a flood control; now the
water from this lake irrigates thousands of acres
of land in the area. The lake is a well known
boating resort area and for fishing. Elephant
Butte was so named because of large Butte in
center of lake. The Elephant Butte Regatta is
held annually.
