This 65 ft. granite monument marks the center that was the site of Camp Merritt. From Sept. 17, 1917 to Jan. 30, 1920, this was the embarkation point for nearly a million doughboys bound for France to serve in the trenches as the American Expeditionary forces. Camp Merritt was huge - 770 acres, 1,314 buildings, a theatre seating 2,3000 persons. The largest Broadway shows were staged there for the boys. |
