The Eider Duck, from which comes the eider-down,
breeds on the coast of Scotland, the Farne Islands, &c.
The nest is built of dry grass, in the heather, and as
incubation proceeds is lined with down from the breast
of the duck. As soon as the ducks begin to sit, the drakes
leave them and may then be seen in small companies.
