The galleon was a type of sailing vessel of the fifteenth and later centuries. It was shorter than a galley and stood high out of the water, often having three or four decks. Round-stemmed, large, clumsy vessels, with bulwarks three or four feet thick, they were built up like castles. Galleons were used for war and trade, particularly by the Spaniards as treasure ships for their American trade. Large sailing vessels are often rather indescriminately called galleons
