THE ST. BERNARD
Must be massive throughout; stand squarely upon his legs;
coat dense and flat (in smooth variety dense and close); thighs and
tail slightly feathered; color orange, mahogany brindle, red brindle
or white, black shadings on face and ears, white blaze up the face,
white muzzle, white collar round neck, white chest, white fore-legs
and feet with white tip at end of tail. Legs must be straight.
Feet large, compact and well arched at toes. Tail carried, low
and never curled over back. Skull broad, stop well defined, nose
level from stop to tip; lips deep, so as to give squareness to
muzzle. Eyes small, well concealed, dark in color with fair amount
of haw showing. Nose large, nostrils black. Ears carried close to
cheek, medium size with fine short hair covering them. Chest wide
and deep, shoulders and arms broad, heavily muscled. An essen-
tial feature of the St. Bernard is size, the bigger the dog the
better, if symmetrical.
