RESEARCH STUDIO
MAITLAND FLORIDE
THE RESEARCH STUDIO is located in the town of Maitland, in central Florida. The above drawing shows
a general layout of its buildings and courtyards which are wall-enclosed and designed to provide its residents
with the utmost privacy. Facing the forecourt are the residence and studio of the Director, the art library
and guest house. Beyond the fan-shaped pool is the main gallery building, and to the left of this are the
studio apartments and workrooms. Across the street, and opposite the gallery entrance, is a garden-chapel
and a court and gallery for the display of sculpture. The gallery is open daily ( except Mondays) from
2 to 5 P.M.

THE RESEARCH STUDIO has for its slogan: THE ARTIST'S JOB IS TO EXPLORE, TO
ANNOUNCE NEW VISIONS AND TO OPEN NEW DOORS. Located in the restful town of Mait-
land in the lake country of central Florida, it is a laboratory for experimentation in art
forms and methods of expression and for the exhibition of work that illustrates the
present growth of modern art.
The Research Studio was founded in 1937 by Mrs. Mary Curtis Bok who shared
with Andre Smith, the director of the institution, the idea of establishing an educational
art center not only for the exhibition of contemporary work, but a place where pro-
fessional artists might avail themselves of the Studio's facilities in the way of work
rooms and studios and at the same time provide an attractive gallery for the exhibitions
of such "findingsā that might prove of interest to the public.
Artists who are selected for residence come for periods of a month or for the full
winter season, depending upon their available time and the work they wish to do. They
are assigned an apartment consisting of a studio with an adjoining kitchenette and a
bedroom and bath.
The cloister-like layout of buildings and courtyards, in a setting of colorful tropical
planting, achieves a distinction and an atmosphere of tranquility that is truly exceptional
