This scene depicts several stages in the art of Navajo Rug weaving. The sheep in the background, from whence the wool is derived; the small child to the right is carding the wool; the maid in the foreground is spinning it into yarn, which operation is repeated many times to get the desired thickness. That which is to be red is then dyed. The last stage is the weaving. The squaw attends to every detail from the flock to the finished article. Weeks of labor are required to produce a Navajo Indian Rug. No two patterns alike, yet each design a story, visualized by the weaver--a picture in her mind and worked out by hand.
