famous old Fort Gumter known all over the world as the spot
that marked the beginning of the ar between the States. In 1829
the Federal Bor't decided to ffrect this fort upon a shoal of
, a shoal of some 2's acres,
about 3 ½ miles from city. For almost 4 years, this little fort repulsed all
attempts of the Federal Sfort to attack the "Lity by water. The original fort
built of brick mixed with oyster shells and cements with walle from 5 to 10 ft, thick,
45 ft. above high slater. It was a casement battery of 190
tiers, although in mins after many months of heavy bombardment be. Poderal guns the
fort never subrendered, but was finally évorcinated by the Confederates, Felt, 5, 1565. It is
still part of Charleston's woast defense, and has been partially reconditioned along modem
lines. Fort can be made ready in 15 min., the soldiers being at Ft. moultrie nearly.
