When Pioneers began to de-
velop Coronado land they
depended upon the Santa
Fe Trail for supplies. In 1864
the Government established
Fort Dodge to police the trail-
Expanding development made
it neccessary to subdue the
Indians-the fort was anim-
portant post during Gen.
Sheridans Indian campaign.
In 1882 it was abandoned, the
reservation opend for settle-
ment. In 1889 Kansas acquired
the Fort and built around these
landmarks the headquarters
of the Pioneer Santale Trail
Patrol-a modern Soldiers
Home. The residents to-day
are Spanish and World War
