Staunton Military Academy was founded in 1860 by Capt. Wm. H. Kable at Charles Town, Va. (now W. Va.). In 1883 the institution was moved to its present site and its name changed from Charles Town Male Academy to Staunton Male Academy. In 1886 the military system was adopted and the name again changed to Staunton Military Academy, under which it was incorporated in 1893
