Mitchell College, a Christian Junior College for young
women. Established in 1856, was named in honor of
Miss Margaret Elliot Mitchell and Mrs. Eliza Mitchell
Grant, daughters of Dr. Elisha Mitchell, who lost his
life exploring the highest peak east of the Mississippi
River, Mount Mitchell. This college is progressive, yet
maintains the cultural ståndards of the Old South. Is
located at Statesville in the beautiful and healthful foot-
hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
